In 2003, Hamilton hosted the Road World Championships, which is the annual world championship for bicycle road racing.  The international television audience for the event was estimated to be 350 million people, the 2nd largest international television event audience for a sporting event behind only the Superbowl. The event captured as many as 750 athletes from 50 countries around the world
