One of the great parts of being part of the team at Tourism Hamilton is welcoming out-of-town writers and bloggers to the city. On May 29, 2013, we were lucky to have 5 international travel writers visit Hamilton as part of a tour organized by Ontario Tourism, prior to TBEX (Travel Bloggers Exchange) conference hosted in Canada for the first time during the same week. Bloggers were encouraged to write stories about their visit, and to live-tweet as they went using hashtags #TBEX and #OntariowithLove.

The group included writers from San Diego, Brooklyn, Ecuador, Vancouver, and Indianapolis.

Our day started in the bus with a dozen doughnuts from the very first Tim Hortons location in the world, located on Ottawa Street in Hamilton. The American writers described eating their first doughnut from Tim Horton’s as becoming an honourary Canadian citizen, as they wiped raspberry filling from their mouths.

The first stop was at beautiful Webster’s Falls, part of the Spencer’s Gorge Conservation Area which is maintained by the Hamilton Conservation Authority. Cameras and mobile devices were quickly removed from the cases as our friends tried to get the best angle from both lookout points above the falls. The flow at Webster’s was quite nice, given the previous day brought some heavy rains to the Hamilton area.

Stop #2 was Weir’s Lane Lavender Farm & Apiary, about a five minute drive from Webster’s Falls. Owner Kevin Beagle took us through the growing process, the products he sells as well as his vision for the future of Weir’s Lane Lavender. He spoke openly about his decision to leave behind a high-stress corporate career to open the agri-tourism business with his wife. The writers squeezed the plants, bringing the smell of the fresh lavender close to their nose for a smell.

We were then treated to samples of lavender-infused honey, which is available for sale in the gift shop. Flavours included plain lavender honey, lavender & ginger honey and the lavender coffee honey. We also sampled lavender-infused lemonade and iced-tea.

We then went around the back of the property to view the Apiary, which had worker bees buzzing into their workstations constantly. Kevin explained the future expansion to the apiary, which includes bringing in more bees to service the new stations.

With our bellies teased with the sweet taste of fresh honey, it was time for lunch. Just minutes away is picturesque downtown Dundas, filled with great shops and lots of dining options. We chose to stop at Detour Cafe, which not only features coffee roasted locally and lots of local food choices. It seemed like sandwiches were the hit of the day, with plates filled with Pulled Chicken, BLTs and the grilled cheese sandwiches seated next to fresh sweet potato soup or quinoa salads.

A sweet treat followed lunch with what CBC Radio’s Fresh Air program named “Ontario’s Best Butter Tart” and a warm drink from the coffee bar. Owner Crystal Asher shared her vision for the restaurant and roastery with the group as well.

If that wasn’t enough, the crew then strolled the streets of Dundas with purpose after spotting Beanermunkey Chocolate. This chocolate shop features all sorts of treats hand-made in the store, including chocolate-covered bacon and Lavender-infused chocolate, which uses lavender grown at Weir’s Lane Lavender! Owner Lori Eisenberger greeted the group and shared a simalar story of leaving the world of corporate finance to pursue her true passion.

Sensing culinary overload, we hopped back on the bus and headed up to Mount Hope to experience Canada’s flying museum, the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum. Greeted by Al Mickeloff, marketing and retail manager, and volunteers, the group was given the chance to fly in a WWII warplane, the DC-3 Dakota! Flying over Hamilton at around 5,000 feet, the crew got a birds-eye view of Hamilton for around 20 minutes.

Back on the ground, we then toured the museum grounds which included great stories about the warplanes from the lineup of volunteers at the Warplane Heritage Museum.

The next stop took us to the edge of the escarpment in Stoney Creek for a visit and tour of Ridge Road Estate Winery. This family-run business has been producing wine using local grapes since 2007. Owner Jayne Douglas gave a tour of the grounds, which has been in her family for generations.

Lots of great conversation about the City of Hamilton helped pass the time as we took off for our final destination, dinner at the Ancaster Mill. The writers immediately were drawn to the waterfall on-site, and then were equally drawn to the choices of earth-to-table menu items offered in dining hall.

We at Tourism Hamilton would like to thank Ethan, Megan, Jeff, Elaine and Susan for joining us on this day-trip of Hamilton, and we look forward to seeing you back soon!
